First Amendment Freedoms: Women Win the Vote

March 2020 – January 2021

Christine Lefebvre Design - Women Win the Vote

Christine Lefebvre Design teamed up again with Freedom Forum (the Newseum) to design their third “pop-up” airport exhibition, First Amendment Freedoms: Women Win the Vote. The exhibit “tells the story of the fierce women who fought a decades-long battle so that women nationwide could vote. It displays images of historic front pages from the Newseum collection and photographs of the suffragists.”

Design services included design concept development, exhibit organization, floor plans and elevations, graphic design, and final graphic production files.

The exhibition was on view through November 2020, in honor of the 100th anniversary of ratification of the 19th Amendment; and concurrently at Washington Dulles International and Ronald Reagan Washington National airports. A video walk-through of the exhibition at the Reagan location can be viewed here.

GRAPHICS CLD used a simple color palette of white, purple, and gold — the colors of the United States’ women’s suffrage movement — and judicious Victorian elements, such as the Victorian-style pattern used to highlight major stories, dingbats (ornaments), and the banners that highlighted section titles. Color blocking and large-scaled silhouetted photographs gave the exhibit contemporary flavor. The Victorian-inspired font Figuera was used for titles, along with Phaeton, “a hand-drawn, old world Victorian beauty.”

FLOOR PLANS Like the two pop-up exhibits before it (Man Walks on the Moon and Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall), CLD designed a different floor plan at each airport location to meet their different space constraints. At right is the Dulles plan. Each content section was enclosed within “wing walls,” which provided both content organization and structural support to the exhibit’s Mila-wall panels.
